9th International Andros Festival
The three-day tribute “Old Friends – First Images”, curated by Pantelis Voulgaris, will present the first short films of remarkable Greek directors. Film screenings will take place at Ciné Avli of Andros Film Club on Thursday August 3, 2023, Friday August 4, 2023 and Saturday August 5, 2023, as part of the 9th International Andros Festival.
The tribute showcases the following directors: Theodoros Angelopoulos, Pantelis Voulgaris, Dimos Theos, Takis Kanellopoulos, Giorgos Karypidis, Fotos Lambrinos, Lambros Liaropoulos, Roviros Manthoulis, Thodoros Marangos, Tonia Marketaki, Christos Paligiannopoulos, Lakis Papastathis, Dimitris Stavrakas, Eva Stefani, Kostas Sfikas, Stavros Tornes.
PANTELIS VOULGARIS’ NOTE
“Watermelons make history too.
For my generation’s cinematographers, the watermelon starring in Theodoros Angelopoulos’ only short film ‘Ekpompi’, is historic.
The few film shootings happened in 1968 and lasted for 6 months.
They weren’t continuous, as the necessary means were lacking.
They were arranged whenever equipment, a few film rolls and some money became available.
Together with the actors, a watermelon starred in ‘Ekpompi’.
I remember Theodoros going everywhere in Athens with the watermelon in his arms, day and night. He wouldn’t let it out of his sight, wouldn’t trust it to strangers’ hands. And because back then one could find watermelons only in summer time, and as the film’s time-worn watermelon was rotting day by day, with its juices flowing out of its flesh, Theodoros had become its nurse, patching up its holes with adhesive tape and bandage.
An unforgettable image.
It was the times when all colleagues gave a hand for each other’s film, took on roles, played extras, carried furniture, all for the sake of cinema.
In the three-day tribute “Old Friends – First Images”, Andros Festival in collaboration with Andros Film Club will present short films of beloved directors at the welcoming and cosy Ciné Avli venue.
Every evening we’ll be sharing stories from the then young colleagues’ madness and anguish over a good shot.
Today, most of them are no longer alive.
On the white screen we’ll resurrect and honour their first steps in cinematography; images that kept the promises for future remarkable cinematic and televisual creations.
